Petronella Scottish Country Dancers

CELEBRATING OVER 50 YEARS OF TRADITIONAL SCOTTISH DANCING IN YORK REGION

The Petronella Scottish Country Dancers were formed in September 1957 and held their early meetings at Thornhill United Church. The troupe spent its next few decades at Royal Orchard Public School, before the school was ultimately closed, then they moved at Johnsview Village P.S

Here's news: We have moved again! Our new location is the Toronto Police Association, 180 Yorkland Blvd., North York (Nr. Sheppard E. & DVP). [MAP]

We are thrilled because the new venue has a good wooden floor, air conditioning, and there is a pub on site where you can have a meal or a drink after dancing.

We meet Wednesdays, September to June, 7:30 - 9:30pm.

Over 50 years of dancing and Petronella continues to thrive. In August 2008, we performed every afternoon for the 16th consecutive year at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall as part of the week-long Chartwell Seniors Jubilee Concert Series. In recognition of the troupe’s 10th appearance at this event in 2002, The Petronella Dancers were presented with a Distinguished Performance Award by the publisher of "Forever Young", a monthly magazine for the over 50s. Petronella’s performances of traditional Scottish dancing, under the guidance of instructors Carole Skinner and Ella Allison, are a staple of this Concert Series, virtually guaranteed to bring to life the daily audience of over 2000 people with the troupe’s stirring music and dance.

In addition, The Petronella Dancers do provide lively public performances of Scottish Country Dancing and Highland Dancing throughout York Region. We have performed over the years at such special events as the Kleinberg Binder Twine Festival, the Thornhill Village Festival, and Unionville’s Celtic Festival…… not to forget Robbie Burns Suppers galore in venues such as the Bayview Golf & Country Club, Thornhill Presbyterian Church and numerous area Seniors Residences such as Glynnwood and Amica, plus several other locations.

The troupe is also available to perform at weddings and other social events wherever a Scottish flavour is required. "Have Dance, Will Travel!" an appropriate slogan for The Petronella Scottish Country Dancers of Thornhill. Information? Muriel Nicol (416) 439-3293 or Carole Skinner (416) 386-1620.
